English: Sgt. James Michaelin, an Amphibious Assault Vehicle operator with 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion, 4th Marine Division, drives an Amphibious Assault Vehicle past a Royal Thai Naval Vessel during a dry run of the final training exercise (FTX) in Thailand of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2011. CARAT is an annual bilateral exercise held between the U.S. and Southeast Asia nations with the goals of enhancing regional cooperation, promote mutual trust and understanding, and increase operational readiness throughout the participating nations. The majority of the U.S. Marines participating in CARAT are reserve Marines who volunteered for the training. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve is an integral element of the Marine Corps Operating Forces and shares the expeditionary mindset that encompasses the Marines’ culture.
