English: Sgt. Brenden Burnham, explosive ordnance disposal on-the-job trainee assists station EOD technicians Sgt. Cassell Wiggins and Staff Sgt. Joshua Gagne in placing two MK-83 1,000-pound bombs in position to be detonated at the munitions treatment range on the Barry M. Goldwater Range east of Yuma, Ariz., March 10, 2010. Members of the station EOD team disposed of more than 6,000 pounds of ordnance that was unsafe to be used. The cache consisted of six MK-83s and several thousand rounds of various small-caliber munitions, which had become unserviceable. “Being able to train with the team before I go to the schoolhouse has given me the opportunity to learn a lot,” said Burnham. “I’m really grateful for the opportunity.” The team safely disposed of the ordnance in three separate blasts occurring one minute apart from one another. Detonating all of the ordnance at once would risk it being felt by the city of Yuma, approximately 5 miles away, said Gunnery Sgt. Michael Chapman, station EOD team leader. |
