English: A CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter flies beside Marines from the 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division during annual qualification training on Zulu Impact Area, range 409, June 11. The battalion's main mission is to provide expeditionary armored combat power for the Marine Division utilizing maneuver, armor-protected firepower and shock effect, to close with and destroy the enemy. Instead of qualifying annually with M-16 rifle, tankers are required to qualify with their mobile weapons of destruction. Portions of the training consisted of the Marines firing weapons found on tanks such as the M2HB 50 caliber machine gun, M240E machine gun and M120 120mm main gun. These weapons have a maximum firing range of three kilometers from which enormous sounds can be heard from up to 50 miles away. "There is no better feeling than when a tank pulls around the corner for support of its troops," said Sgt. Juan Ordaz, tank commander, Alpha Company, 4th Tank Battalion. "When they see us coming, a certain sense of ease is felt in the air." According to Lance Cpl. Robert A. Jeub, ammunitions loader, Alpha Company, the training is crucial to their everyday mission accomplishment. The unit was erected during World War II and is now composed entirely of reserve personnel. The unit holds historical documentation of participating during multiple campaigns such as Kwajalein, Saipan and Iwo Jima. |
