Description
English: 090123-M-9999S-001.jpg CAMP BASTION, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - Marines with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment (Reinforced), participate in the Danish Contingent March at Camp Bastion, Helmand Province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Jan. 23, 2009. The 23-kilometer hike was held to honor fallen Danish soldiers, and the proceeds generated by the $20 registration fee will be donated to the soldiers' families. More than 100 participants consisting of U.S. Marines and sailors and British and Danish service members donned their rifles and body armor or weighted packs and took to the road for the event. "It was worth every drop of sweat," said Chief Warrant Officer Jonathan H. Lacoste.. "It was for a great cause and it's (great) how they've brought the alliance together here. It builds camaraderie." Lacoste said when he thought about those who had fallen it gave him the motivation to keep pushing to put one foot in front of the other. At the finish line, participants received a completion medal and certificate of participation. Lacoste is the combat operations center senior watch officer for 3/8, the ground combat element of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force - Afghanistan.
