Description
English: MCM-1 LJG By Lawrence Giberson, Quantico Sentry/Potomac News Wheels up! A Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat is hoisted to the rafters at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico November 10. The Design and Production Company Inc. from Lorton was in charge of hanging the 5,895 pound vintage World War II fighter. The Wildcat served as the primary aircraft of the Marine Corps during the early stages of Pacific campaign through Guadalcanal. Powered by one Pratt & Whitney R-1830-86 radial engine, the Wildcat had a maximum speed of 318 MPH at 19,400 feet, a maximum service sealing of 34,800 feet and a range of 1,650 miles. This aircraft, No. 12114, was delivered to Naval Air Station New York on Dec. 17, 1942. The aircraft was later transferred to various Navy squadrons until it was stricken from Navy records on Nov. 30, 1944.
