Description

It has been a tough start to the shipping season on the Great Lakes. Lots of thick and shifting ice. In an effort to get things jump started, the US Coast Guard has sent the USCGC Morro Bay (WTGB-106), one of the fleet’s 140 foot ice breaking tugs to Lake Superior to help out. I snapped this photo when the vessel was about 5 miles short of the Duluth Entry. Note how close the ice fisherman are to the shipping lane. Crazy.

This photo also shows that the Morro Bay is lashed side-by-side to the USCGC Alder (WLB-216). I thought this was strange when I snapped the photo. It turns out I was right. Morro Bay sustained rudder damage when breaking ice in Thunder Bay and was disabled. The vessel was towed back to Duluth. Just short of the Duluth Entry, they stopped and lashed the Morro Bay to the side of the large Alder to facilitate transiting the Duluth Ship Canal.
