Summary

[edit]
Description
English: United States Post Office, 38 State Street, Seneca Falls, New York, May 2022. Designed under the supervision of James A. Wetmore, the Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury Department, this two-story buff brick structure is an intriguing marriage of several architecture styles that were fashionable at the time of its construction (1934): onto a simplified "Stripped Classical" substrate are pinned a laundry list of Art Deco ornamental tropes, while the building's squat massing and horizontal orientation point the way forward to then then-up-and-coming Streamline Moderne aesthetic. The slightly projecting central portion of the façade is styled as a mock temple front, with fluted pilaster strips crowned with stylized Doric capitals interspersed between enormous columns of windows separated by impressive green marble transoms. The entablature consists of a frieze wherein the words "UNITED STATES POST OFFICE" are presented in a typical typeface of the era and flanked by engravings in floral, shell and scroll motifs typical of Art Deco, as well as a parapet wherein a Neoclassical cartouche ornament is flanked by stylized outstretched wings, perhaps the consummate expression of the building's stylistic mélange. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in its own right in 1989, and is also a contributing property to the NRHP-listed Seneca Falls Village Historic District established in 1991.
