Summary

[edit]
Description
English: United States Post Office, 6 Lake Street, Owego, New York, February 2022. Built in 1920 to a design by James A. Wetmore, then the Acting Supervising Architect for the U.S. Treasury, the Owego Post Office features a relatively simplified and streamlined Colonial Revival design of a type frequently used in the era for small-scale institutional structures. It's a steel-framed, brick-veneered building one story high whose Classically-inspired details - enormous flat-arched nine-over-nine sash windows crowned with keystones; entrance trimmed in limestone and topped by a broken pediment, shield cartouche and swag relief; parapet punctuated by decorative balustrade panels - typify the style in their own austere way. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places both in its own right and as a contributing property to the Owego Central Historic District.
