Description
English: Three of the leading "aces" of U.S. Navy Fighting Squadron 17 (VF-17) "Jolly Rogers" pose by a Vought F4U-1A Corsair fighter, after their unit left the central Solomons combat zone, 22 March 1944. They are (l to r):
  • Lieutenant Commander Roger Richards Hedrick (VF-17 XO, credited with 9 "kills"),
  • Lieutenant Commander John Thomas Blackburn (VF-17 CO, credited with 11 planes),
  • Lieutenant junior grade Ira Cassius Kepford (credited with 16 planes and then the U.S. Navy's leading "ace").
