Description
English: U.S. Navy aircraft of Carrier Air Wing 2 (CVW-2) fly in formation during an air power demonstration over the Pacific Ocean on 4 August 2018. CVW-2 was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) for exercise RIMPAC 2018. The view illustrates the U.S. Navy Carrier Air Wing composition in the late 2010s, after phasing out of the Grumman EA-6B Prowler in 2015 and before the introduction of the Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning II. A Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye leads the formation. The E-2C was being replaced by the E-2D since 2017. All other fixed wing aircraft are versions of the McDonnell Douglas/Boeing F/A-18. Visible are three F/A-18C Hornet, five F/A-18E Super Hornet, two F/A-18F and one EA-18G Growler. The F/A-18C was being phased out. Not visible are the Sikorsky MH-60R/S helicopters assigned to the wing. In August 2018, CVW-2 consisted of the following squadrons:
  • Strike Fighter Squadron 2 (VFA-2) "Bounty Hunters": F/A-18F
  • VFA-34 "Blue Blasters": F/A-18C
  • VFA-137 "Kestrels": F/A-18E
  • VFA-192 "Golden Dragons": F/A-18E
  • Electronic Attack Squadron 136 (VAQ-136) "Gauntlets": EA-18G
  • Carrier Airborne Early Waring Squadron 113 (VAW-113) "Black Eagles": E-2C
  • Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 78 (HSM-78) "Blue Hawks": MH-60R
  • Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 4 (HSC-4) "Black Knights": MH-60S
