Description

ARGONNE RESEARCHER INSPECTS THE CRYOST AT OF THE NEW POSITIVE ION INJECTOR.

A SUPERCONDUCTING INJECTOR ACCELERATOR AND POSITIVE ION SOURCE HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE WORLD'S FIRST SUPERCONDUCTING HEAVY-ION ACCELERATOR, COMPLETING THE FIRST STAGE OF A THREE-PART UPGRADE TO THE ARGONNE TANDEM LINEAR ACCELERATOR SYSTEM (ATLAS). ATLAS BEAM INTENSITY WILL INCREASE 100-FOLD AND PERMIT ACCELERATION OF IONS AS HEAVY AS URANIUM-238 TO ENERGIES AS HIGH AS 1.9 BILLION ELECTRON-VOLTS. THE ATLAS UPGRADE CONSISTS OF THE NEW ION SOURCE AND INJECTOR ACCELERATOR WITH 18 NEWLY DESIGNED SUPERCONDUCTING RESONATORS.
