Description
English: Pictured is a U.S Army AH-64D Apache Helicopter at Kandahar Airfield in 2011.

U.S. AH-64Ds typically flew in Afghanistan and Iraq without the Longbow Radar in the absence of armoured threats.

The Apache is a twin-engine army attack helicopter developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing).

The US Army has more than 800 Apaches in service, and more than 1,000 have been exported.

The Apache was first used in combat in 1989 in the US military action in Panama. It was used in Operation Desert Storm and has supported low intensity and peacekeeping operations worldwide including Turkey, Bosnia and Kosovo.

The first Apache Longbow was delivered in April 1997 to the US Army. The AH-64D Longbow was deployed by the US Army in Afghanistan as part of Operation Anaconda.

Kandahar Airfield, Kandahar Provence in Afghanistan was used by the RAF for combat operations from 2001 to 2014.

Part of Kandahar Airfield was known as RAF Kandahar, It operated RAF, Fleet Air Arm and Army Air Corps aircraft and was one end of the "Air Bridge" that started in RAF Brize Norton in the UK.All other ISAF airborne forces were also based there.

Kandahar International Airport as it was called originally is located some 10 miles South-East of the city of Kandahar in Afghanistan.

It is the country’s second international airport and one of its biggest military bases, it has the space for over two hundred military aircraft.
