Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Diagram of divergences in hand elements of the theropod dinosaurs Tyrannosauridae ( here Albertosaurus, Tarbosaurus, Daspletosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex ). although very similar in basic, ther is differences in the matter of the construction of the arm bones and the stunted metacarpal III.
  • Not to scale, but all the arms are about the same size (except Tarbosaurus, which has the smallest forelimb elements of any Tyrannosaurid). As coelurosaurs, some tyrannosaurids have very hollow arm bones, which may have made them fragile and could not have been used for heavy loads. They also have metarcarpal III fused with metacarpal II. Tyrannosaurus on the other hand has very thick arm bones, and the metacarpal III is detaching from metacarpal II. This indicates that it may had a special function in the hand.
