Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Around 4 a.m. local time on October 30, 2018, Typhoon Yutu made landfall on the northern Philippine island of Luzon. Although the typhoon had weakened to Category 2 strength (down from Category 5), it caused several fatalities and landslides. As of November 1, a total of fifteen deaths have been reported in the Philippines from Typhoon Yutu.

The typhoon previously made landfall in the U.S. Mariana Islands as perhaps the strongest typhoon ever to pass over the islands of Saipan and Tinian, leaving about 42,000 citizens affected by widespread devastation, including power outages, destroyed homes, and damaged infrastructure.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Typhoon Yutu on October 28 as it was approaching the Philippines. At the time, Yutu sported a large, cloud-filled eye and a tight apostrophe shape typical of very strong storms.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center on the afternoon of November 1, Typhoon Yutu was located about 184 mi (296 km) southeast of Hong Kong and was tracking northward at 5.8 mph (9.3 km/h). It is carrying maximum sustained winds of about 46 mph (74 km/h). Yutu is facing increasing wind shear and cold sea surface temperatures. It is forecast to dissipate on November 3 offshore of southeastern China.
