English: Typhoon Shanshan was spinning towards Japan’s Honshu Island in early August 2018.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the storm on August 7. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that on that date the maximum sustained winds near the center of the storm were 80 mph (130 km/h), making it a Category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

By 11:00 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC) on August 8, JTWC reported that Shanshan was located near 24.5 degrees north latitude and 141.3 degrees east longitude, about 92 nautical miles east-southeast of Yokosuka, Japan. The storm had maintained Category 1 status with maximum sustained winds near 80.5 mph (129.6 km/h).

Typhoon Shanshan’s western quadrant is expected to pass over Tokyo while the center of circulation stays off-shore before it turns northwestward away from Honshu and travels out to sea as it weakens.
