Description
English: On August 25, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of recently-formed Typhoon Saola intensifying over the northern Philippine Sea.

Near the time this image was acquired, Saola (called Goring in the Philippines) was carrying maximum sustained winds near 110 mph (177 km/h), which is equivalent to a Category 2 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. It was moving southward, just east of the Batanes Island, while delivering heavy rain and powerful wind gusts to northeastern Luzon Island as well as the Batanes in the Philippines.

At 11:00 p.m. EDT on August 25 (0300 UTC on August 26), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that Typhoon Saola was located approximately 307 miles (494 km) north-northeast of Manila, Philippines and was tracking southward. Maximum sustained winds were about 115 mph (185 km/h) and maximum significant wave height was reported to be 30 feet (9 meters).

Typhoon Saola is expected to continue to track slowly southward through August 26 before stalling in the waters east of Luzon on August 27, after which it will be steered northward and begin to intensify. The JWTC advises that the storm will be affected by a complex and evolving steering pattern, but forecasts that Typhoon Saolo may reach a peak of 150 mph (242 km/h) on August 29, which is equivalent to a Category 4 storm. It is expected to weaken slightly before reaching southern Taiwan by August 30.
