Description
English: On August 30, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) passed over the Northwestern Pacific Ocean near the Northern Mariana Islands and acquired a true-color image of Typhoon Jebi. The image showed a large typhoon with a strong apostrophe shape and a small eye.

On August 30 at 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC), the eye of Typhoon Jebi was located near latitude 17.8 degrees north and longitude 146.2 degrees west. That’s about 161 nautical miles north-northeast of Saipan, the largest island in the Northern Mariana Islands. Jebi was moving toward the west near 14 mph (22km/h). Maximum sustained winds were about 126.6 mph (203.7 km/h) with higher gusts, making it a strong Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

By August 31, Jebi intensified into a super typhoon with a 15 nautical-mile-wide eye and was undergoing eyewall replacement. At 11:00 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC) the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that the storm’s maximum sustained winds were about 172 mph (278 km/h), making it a strong Category 5 storm – the strongest storm of 2018 to date. Typhoon Jebi’s eye was centered near 18.8 degrees north latitude and 141.0 degrees east longitude, or about 316 nautical miles northwest of Saipan. Jebi was moving to the west-northwest at 14 mph (22 km/h).

The JTWC expects Jebi to turn northward to make landfall between Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan by September 4. The storm should begin to weaken and is forecast to carry maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (207.6 km/h) – a moderate Category 3 storm. While much more favorable than the present strength, a Category 3 typhoon can bring very serious damage, including broken or uprooted trees, damage to well-built framed houses, and loss of electricity and water
