Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Two corporals, Western Front, during World War I. The unknown photographer who took this image of two young corporals appears to have been trying to show physical opposites. One man is quite short and burly and appears slightly older and possibly married. The other is tall and painfully thin and seems to have a bandaged wrist and injured hand.

Both these superficially different men appear to be seasoned campaigners. Both have their rifles well protected against the mud and are well wrapped against the weather themselves. The thinner man has a non-regulation woollen scarf as well as one of the leather jerkins issued from late in 1916.
[Original reads: 'Types of men who are fighting for you. Note the first signs of winter.']
