English: The three types of door opening button on Tyne and Wear Metro cars, all photographed on 10 October 2005.
LEFT: The protype style. This style had a tough "rubber syle" exterior to the button. This required a significant pressure to be exerted to open the doors. It has been known for passengers to have been conveyed beyond their intended destination as they have been unable to get the doors to open. CENTRE: The standard button. This style of button has been used for many years on Metrocars. The buttons were easy to press because of the "suede style" cover to the button. Recently, the button covers have been pulled off meaning the button itself has become exposed. RIGHT: The refurbished type. This new style is much easier to view as the train is approaching, having been designed to comply with recent Disability Discrimination Act regulations. On the outside the buttons are painted red to contrast with the yellow doors. On the inside the buttons are yellow, as shown here. This image was made by me using the GIMP, based on sections cropped from the three photographs below:
