Title
Two views of an unidentified, possibly Roman object.
Description
English: The object is made from cast copper alloy. The function is, yet unknown. In plan it is an elongated sub rectangle, which tapers slightly towards a terminal. Both terminals appear to be broken, but these are not recent breaks, as the patina covers them. The base is flat and undecorated. The profile of the object is rectangular and maintains a continuous depth of 2.7mm. The upper surface is decorated with blocks of ribbing, which are perpendicular to the long edges of the object. Between the ribbing, the object is undecorated except at the edges where a shallow low-relief pointed oval or a pair of triangles occurs. These are particularly shallow and are difficult to see. The surface of the object has an almost complete dark brown/green coloured patina. It measures 44.75mm long and 6.16mm wide. It weighs 4.8g.

The decoration is reminiscent of that found on Roman bracelets, Crummy (1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds From Excavations in Colchester 1971-9) illustrates examples with similar decoration, for example Nos. 1724 and 1728. However, the recorded object appears to have been cast intentionally flat, therefore is not a bracelet. Nevertheless, a Roman date could be suggested due to the likeness in the style of decoration.
