35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Cervidae; Genus: Mazama; Genus species: Mazama gouazoubira. Animal characteristics: Height: 61cm; Weight: 16.3 kg; Identification: This small deer has a coat color varying from brown, gray brown to gray. Males bear a single spike antler that is usually cast every year, but may be retained into a second year; Habitat: Savanna to tropical evergreen forests; Diet: Herbivore: grasses and fallen fruit; Reproduction: The female matures at 12 months and the male at 17 months. There appears to be no seasonality to their reproduction. Gestation is around 220 days and two fawns are usually born; Social Structure: These deer are found singly or in pairs; Behavior: These deer are active at night and they live in areas with poor visibility, so little is known about their behavior; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The brown brocket is hunted and exported where the most valuable exports are meat and hides.
