Title |
English: Two men with a coal car at the Renton Coal Mine, October 1916 |

Description |
English: Sometime in the 1910s, electric hauling engines replaced mules for pulling the heavy carloads of coal out of western Washington's mines. Booms running upward from the engines connected the engines to an electric line above. Electricity was a better power source for the engines than gasoline because it did not produce deadly carbon monoxide. On the other hand, miners had to be very careful not to touch the electric lines. This 1916 photo shows George Pritchard and Sky Williams with an electric hauling motor and coal car. The wood stacked nearby is called lagging and was used to shore up the sides and ceiling of the mine. The photo was taken at the Renton Coal Mine by Darius Kinsey, a photographer well known for his logging photos. Original photograph: Kinsey, Darius, October 1916. Copied in 1976 by the Museum of History and Industry.
