The Danish fastelavnsbolle (Shrovetide bun or Lenten bun), a pastry traditionally eaten on Fastelavn.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fastelavnsboller (lit. "Fastelavn buns", also known in English as the "Shrovetide bun" or "Lenten bun") are pastries associated with the celebration of Fastelavn, the Danish variant of the Northern European tradition of Carnival leading up to Lent.

The fastelavnsbolle is a round, sweet bread roll typically filled with either a thick custard, whipped cream or fruit jam and decorated with a simple icing after baking. The type of filling and topping may vary, but the most well-known style is based on a yeast-leavened pastry dough rich in butter.

The tradition of eating fastelavnsboller in Denmark is related to another Fastelavn activity; costumed children going door to door and singing - a form of trick-or-treat in which fastelavnsboller is the most traditional treat. Today, fastelavnsboller are popular among children as well as adults, and are sold in bakeries all through the month of February.

Similar baked goods are eaten in other countries celebrating related holidays, for example the Swedish Semlor eaten on Fettisdagen.
