inted. It is marked 1670. John Quincys por-trait is marked also plainly as one and a half yearsold, and with a date which is a bit dimmed ; it iseither 1670 or 1690. If it is 1690, the picture canbe that of John Ouincy, though he would scarcelybe as large as is the portrayed figure. If the dateis 1670, it cannot be John Ouincy, for he was bornin 1689. The picture has the same checker-boardfloor as the three other Gibbes portraits, four rowsof squares wide; and the childs toes are set at thesame row as are the toes of the shoes in the pictureof Robert Gibbes. The portraits of Henry and Margaret Gibbes arealso marked plainly 1670. S.Appleton, of Charlestown, West Virginia. The dress of these five children is of the samerich materials that would be worn by their mothers. The Padishal child wears black velvet like hermothers gown ; but her frock is brightened withscarlet points of color. The linings of the velvethanging sleeves, the ribbon knots of the white virago-sleeve, the shoe-tip, the curious cap-tassel, are ofbright scarlet. We have noted the dominance ofscarlet in old English costumes. It was evidentlythe only color favored for children. The lace cap,the rich lace stomacher, the lace-edged apron, all areof Flemish lace. Margaret Gibbes wears a frock ofsimilar shape, and equally rich and dark in color; itis a heavy brocade of blue and red, with a bit ofyellow. Her fine apron, stomacher, and full sleevesare rich in needlewo
