35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Bovidae; Genus: Connochaetus; Genus species: Connochaetus taurinus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 1.7-2.4 m; Height: 1.3-1.4 m; Weight: male: 230 kg, female: 160 kg; Identification: The wildebeest is a thick-necked, long-faced antelope with horns that flare out sideways and then upwards (rather like a cow???s). Its body color ranges from dark gray brown to slate blue to pale grayish fawn, with various degrees of mottling. The muzzle, tail and shaggy mane are all black. The neck and chin are bearded in long black, brown, cream, or white hair. Their short legs are brown or ochre. It has downward curving horns with ends that point up and inward; Habitat: Open grasslands, bush savannas; Diet: Herbivore: grass; Reproduction: After a gestation period of 8.5 months, the female wildebeest will produce a single calf; Social Structure: During the dry season, herds with tens of thousands of animals are quite common. Breeding herds usually have 150 females with their young and 1-3 males; Behavior: Blue wildebeests will migrate as much as 1600 km in search of water and food; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Predators are lions, cheetahs, hunting dogs, and hyenas.
