Summary
[edit]DescriptionTwo benchmarks on the Bridgegate - geograph.org.uk - 751356.jpg |
English: Two benchmarks on the Bridgegate. I think that the two different benchmarks, on the road side western face of the Bridgegate, reflect two different surveys. It seems likely that the anchor mark and letters D[atum] S[urvey] were carved during the First Primary Levelling carried out between 1840-1860. The more familiar mark on the right may have been carved during the Second Geodetic Levelling carried out between 1912-21. I should add that I have not been able to prove this theory. There is a similar anchor benchmark on the Water Tower to the northwest of the city - see 680689 |
