Summary

[edit]
Description

"The prototype of the AH-1G first flew on 7 September 1965, during a U.S. Army Attack Helicopter evaluation for fire suppression during air assault operations. The basic rotor system, powerplant and transmission of the UH-1C "Huey" was combined with a narrow fuselage design for maximum speed and maneuverability. The Army placed an initial contract with Bell Helicopter Company in 1966 for 110 aircraft and deliveries began in June 1967. Operational deployment to Vietnam began in the latter months of the same year. The aircraft proved so successful that an additional 868 were ordered in April of 1968. "The turret on the underside of the fuselage is capable of mounting armament systems, the most common being a Gatling style six barrel 7.62 mm minigun with 4000 rounds, supported by a 40 mm grenade launcher with 300 rounds. Structural provisions have been incorporated in the airframe to accept other armament systems. "The "Cobra" on display [hanging] was the second aircraft manufactured, and was transferred to the museum in November of 1970 from the Army Material Command"
