Afrikaans: Uitsig op Tweeling op dynserige winterdag, van die R26-roete af, oos-Vrystaat. Op die voorgrond wei beeste op weiveld wat, soos blyk uit die vore, in die verlede omgeploeg is vir mielieproduksie. Hierdie weiveld is ingedring deur pionier karroïedstruike, Seriphium plumosum L., wat minstens dekades lank teenwoordig sal wees. Die oorspronklike produktiwiteit van hoëveldse grasveld herstel nie na die omploeg daarvan nie, en oorleef in 'n permanent verarmde toestand, veral wat botaniese en insekdiversiteit betref.
English: View on Tweeling from the R26 route in the eastern Free State. In the foreground is a field grazed by cattle. The field has been ploughed in the past for maize production, as evidenced by the traces of furrows. The field is also invaded by the sturdy pioneer karroid shrub Seriphium plumosum L., which along with termite infestation (Trinervitermes trinervoides) will persist for at least decades afterwards. The original productivity of highveld grassland is never restored after ploughing, and remains in a perpetually degraded state, especially in terms of botanical and insect diversity. |
