Title |
Tutulus Brooch (reverse) |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy tutulus brooch (Hattatt, ref 539). A circular plate brooch, 33mm in diameter, that has a raised outer rim with six small lugs, spaced at regular intervals around the outside edge. Four of these lugs are purely decorative, but two lugs directly opposite each other, are integrally moulded with, and conceal, the pin housing and the catchplate. Immediately inside the raised rim are a pair of shallow concentric grooves incised upon a hollow conical body (approx 1.5mm thick) which rises 8mm and terminates in a flat central disk recessed inside a moulded rim, 8.5mm dia. This central disk is punctuated with a raised central pip, 2mm dia. The beautifully formed conical body seems to have been turned upon a lathe, or at least the original model for this brooch was manufactured in this way. The concentric grooves on the body are very precisely rendered indeed and the surface is smooth. Occasionally brooches of this type are enamelled in the turned grooves ~ see LIN-5D0F55. The reverse of the brooch is scored by file marks, especially around the pin housing and catchplate. The convex depression in the centre remains ‘as cast’. The pin housing is a pair of integrally cast projecting lugs that form a narrow slot for a hinged pin. The slightly curved pin, broken off half way along its length, once turned upon an iron axial bar, now fused solid to the copper-alloy housing with corrosion deposits. The catchplate hook is broken off, a stub remaining. The brooch has suffered plough damage and 1/5th of the raised rim is now partially detached. |
