Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Slightly larger than the state of Texas, Turkey encompasses about 769,632 square kilometers of land (297,156 sq. mi), placing it as the 38th country in the world. The long, sweeping coastline sitting on the Mediterranean Sea provides popular tourist destinations and the mild climate spurs lots of vegetative growth, giving the coastal region a green color when viewed from space. Just inland from the coast the land pushes upward to the peaks of the tall, rugged Taurus Mountains. The mountains separate the mild, moist seaside from the dry Anatolian Plateau.

The large white area in the upper center of the image is Lake Tuz. Located just west of central Turkey, Lake Tuz is one of the world’s largest hypersaline lakes with a surface area of approximately 625 square miles. The arid and extremely saline ecological conditions of the lake and its surrounding area supports a very rich and important biodiverse community, especially of plants and bacteria, many unique to this environment. There have been 279 plant species and 120 salt-loving bacteria reported in the Lake Tuz ecosystem.
