Summary
[edit]DescriptionTurf Shed, Errigle - geograph.org.uk - 1046326.jpg |
English: Turf Shed, Errigle One of my memories of staying at my grandparent's farm was bringing home the turf, in the 1950's. It had to be built in the turf-shed, the walls were more open at the time, to aid ventilation. My task as a youngster was to build up the walls and having short trousers and wellies, but the men clodded in the turf from the cart as quickly as they could, and I got the odd skite on the bare leg which hurt. Afterwards, the turf mould mould have been coming out of your eyes and ears and you would have been ready for the tin bath.
The grocery lorry would come once a week, you would have been able to purchase almost everything. Some of these vehicles collected your eggs in large sectioned boxes at the same time. They had to be gently cleaned, but they didn't like excessive water used. The dirtier ones you kept to eat. The bread-man came though I do a lot of wholemeal bread was cooked in the oven. Then there was the lemonade wagon, C&C was a common variety, with brown lemonade a favourite. I collected the bottles which were thrown out and brought them home after the summer holidays and got threepence each for them, one year I made as much as seven shillings and six pence. |
