English: Tunic (1857 Pattern) - Private - 14th Regiment of Foot - New Zealand Wars Belonged to 1118 James Quedley, 14th Regiment of Foot, 2nd Battalion red cloth with buff (cream) facings on collar and cuffs; white piping; cream flannel lining construction- single-breasted; 8 buttons down front; hand stitched buttonholes; waisted; skirt with central split at back with two-point pocket flaps either side cuffs- straight around overlaid with three button flap at front with twill tape 'loop' detailing around buttons; three buttons on each flap collar- cream Melton cloth; narrow stand-up collar with rounded 'points'; fastened by brass hook (over small black tongue) and 'flattened' semi-circular eye pocket flaps- two-point flaps at back of skirt each side of split; looped and buttoned (two buttons) as for cuffs; cream piped edging; polished white-cream (linen) lining; marked in ink with service number "1118-A" on rhs back pocket; hand-stitched maroon twi8ll tape strengthening shoulder straps- buff (cream) Melton cloth with white piping; hand stitched buttonhole near collar; regiment number "14" hand embroidered in red thread buttons- brass regimental buttons- INDIA (Royal Tiger) - 14 - WATERLOO other badges- five good conduct chevrons in woven cream twill tape, point upwards, on lower arm (rhs) markings- maker's labels- printed label inside below neck- "8"; numbers (size.) stencilled in white paint inside skirt at back- "5-6 - 36-32"; wearer's service number marked in black ink on rear rhs pocket lining |

Tunic, 14th Regiment of Foot (1857 Pattern) Belonged to 1118 James Quedley, 14th Regiment of Foot, 2nd Battalion 1118 Private James Quedley, 2nd Battalion, 14th Foot Regiment served in the Crimean War and in New Zealand. He arrived in New Zealand on 29.11.1860 aboard the Robert Lowe, from Queenstown, Cork, in Ireland. In New Zealand he saw action in the Waikato Campaign (Rangiriri 1863) and possibly in Chute's March during the Wanganui Campaign (1865-66). In January 1868 James Quedley transferred from the 14th Regiment to the 2nd Battalion, 18th Royal Irish Regiment so that he could take his discharge in New Zealand in April that year. At the time of his discharge James Quedley had served 21 years and 302 days. He was awarded five Good Conduct badges and received the British Crimea (2 bars including Alma), and Turkish Crimea medals and the NZ Medal, and later the King's Empire Veteran badge. James Quedley died in 1919.
