English: This photograph is of TUNGANATH, the highest Shiva temple in the world. In the foreground is a barefoot devotee in ecstasy with this iconic temple as a backdrop. This historic monument is at an elevation of11352 feet and believed to be over 5000 years old.
It is located in the Himalayas in Uttarakhand State in India and abounds in legends. Apart from its religious and spiritual significance, it is an incredible treking experience. The start point is Chopta village which likes at an altitude of 9600 feet. From here you climb steeply to 11300 feet to the temple in about 4 hours with incredible views en route. The temple location itself offers breathtaking 360 degree all round views of surrounding mountains and valleys.Another attraction is the Chandrashila peak which is an hour and a half climb from Tungnath. Amazing place, incredible experience. |

The temple is one of the five Kedars. It is closed during winters . Villagers say that adepts from the higher reaches of the Himalayas visit this shrine in extreme cold to avoid the crowd
