DescriptionTullow St. Columba's Church East Window (Panorama) 2013 09 06.jpg |
St. Columba's Church, Tullow, County Carlow, Ireland English: Three-light stained glass window in memory of John Richard Wolseley and his Frances Annabella, depicting the sermon on the mount. There are conflicting reports regarding the authorship. According to the report of the Carlow Sentinel, this window is a work by Messrs Campbell, of Dublin, possibly J. A. Campbell & Co. (Ltd) who were active 1906–1926. However gloine.ie attributes this window to Mayer & Co., Munich. Dedicated on 26 January 1908 by Bishop of Ossory, Charles Frederick D‘Arcy. The window is described as follows: “The east window, which is the Wolseley Memorial Window, consists of three lights, another subject treated is the sermon on the Mount. The centre light represents the Saviour sitting on the mountain side, and at His feet a mother is pointing her child up to Him, while in the Canopy is a kneeling Angel, bearing a scroll containing the words–‘Blessed are the meek.’ On either side the disciples are seen in various attitudes, with devout upward look of rapt attention, as they listen to his words.” (See St. Columba's Church, Tullow in Carlow Sentinel, 25 January 1908, p. 3, left column; St. Columba's Church, Tullow in Carlow Sentinel, 1 February 1908 (quote taken from this article); gloine.ie.) The window presents multiple quotes from the sermon: “Blessed are the Meek” (Matthew 5:5, written on a scroll that is carried by a an angel in the top section of the centre window), “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8, band across all lights below the main feature), and “Blessed are the peace-makers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9, centre window lower section). Inscription of the dedication: “Dedicated to the glory of God in loving memory of our father Sir John Richard Wolseley, 6th Baronet of Mount Wolseley who died 20th June 1874 and of our fondly loved and devoted mother Frances Annabella his wife who died 30th May 1907.”
