Description
English: Tsuba and bag. Circular steel disc with floral inlay design in gold, copper, and silver. Inlay laid into fine cross-hatching on surface of the steel. On reverse, floral design in silver and gold. Two tanukio holes (for wrist string). Silver border to tanukio, kazuko and kogai holes. Tagane (chisel) marks to central nakago hole where the hole has been shaped to fit a new blade. Rectangular handsewn bag with white blue spotted silk. Red cotton band at top and lining. Tsuba (sword guards) were used to protect the sword wielder's hands from sliding onto the blade. They are usually finely decorated, incorporating traditional motifs and designs and made from a variety of metals, such as iron, steel, brass or shakudo - an alloy of copper and gold.
