Summary

[edit]
Description

'Astrolabe' was one of the French explorer La Perouse's two ships. The expedition disappeared after leaving Sydney in 1789.

In 1825 an Irish sea captain discovered the wrecks in the Solomon Islands. The indigenous tribe suggested that La Perouse himself had survived on the island until about 1822. The anchor was brought back to what is now Port Vila as evidence of the discovery.

The presence of Europeans in the South Pacific in the 1820s was mainly because of whales. Trypots from this period are found all over the South Pacific and Australasia.
