Oh My! What big feet you have! Trumpeter swans are very big birds. Adult male trumpeters can weigh 21 to 38 pounds while adult female trumpeters weigh 20 to 25 pounds. To get all of that weight off the water and flying, it takes some huge feet. Trumpeters use these big feet to run across the water to generate enough speed and lift to get airborne. When they run you can hear the loud "thuwop, thuwop, thuwop..." as their feet slap the waters surface. When coming in for a landing, they need to slow down to prevent injury when all of that weight comes splashing down. They will often stick their feet out to create drag to slow them down, and then use them as skis on the water to slow momentum before coming to rest. When they have their feet extended coming in for a landing, it looks like two frying pans hanging below them. www.trumpeterswansociety.org/faq.html Photo:Trumpeter swan gliding in for a landing-Tom Koerner/USFWS |
