Title
Trumpet Brooch Derivative from Fridaythorpe
Description
English:

Copper alloy

Brooch. Trumpet Derivative with bow plate and fantail, Mackreth Type 4.1a. A cast head plate with curved ends and the stub of a top loop conceals a crimped tubular housing for an axis bar retaining a hinged cast pin, the latter survives albeit twisted. The bow narrows below the head, expanding as a disc with six radial spokes and a raised rim; a central domed boss is attached by a rivet whose split ends are splayed at the back of the brooch. A bipartite lug projects from either side of the disc; a close parallel from this area bears a triangular fantail, here lost. Suggested date: Early Roman, 80-150.

Length: 30.6mm, Width: 18.6mm, Thickness (at disc but clear of boss): 3.6mm, Weight: 6.65gms.
