e top of the peak its once activecrater is filled up, and we find a convex surface (The Plain ofRambleta) surmounted towards its eastern end by a diminutivecone, 500 feet high, called Humboldts Ash Cone. The slopeof the great cone of Teneriffe ranges from 280 to 380; and below alevel of 7000 feet the general slope of the whole mountain down tothe waters edge varies from io° to 120 from the horizontal. Thegreat cone is penetrated by numerous basaltic dykes. The Cape de Verde Islands, which contain beds of limestonealong with volcanic matter, possess in the island of Fuego anactive volcano, rising to a height of 7000 feet above the surface ofthe ocean. The central cone, like that of Teneriffe, rises fromwithin an outer crater, formed of basalt alternating with beds ofagglomerate, and traversed by numerous dykes of lava. This hasbeen broken down on one side like that of Somma ; and over itsflanks are scattered numerous cones of scoria, the most recentdating from the years 1785 and 1799.
