Summary
[edit]DescriptionTrue Vine Christian Center (fmr Most Holy Redeemer RC Church), Cheektowaga, New York - 20200930.jpg |
English: True Vine Christian Center, 25 Avery Place at Genesee Street, Cheektowaga, New York, September 2020. Although the simplified Gothic Revival aesthetic (featuring a cross-gabled floor plan, modestly adorned copper fleche with louvered windows, and sleek geometric lines apparent in the buttresses and on the front parapet) and the stylized carved figures framing the front entrance are more redolent of port-World War II church architecture in the area, the building dates to quite a bit earlier than that (1932). The original congregation to worship here was that of Most Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church, a parish founded in 1913 to serve a German-American community which at the time was expanding steadily eastward past the Buffalo city line and into the suburban Pine Hill section of the neighboring town of Cheektowaga. The original church building was erected in 1914 on the plot immediately west of the present-day building (to the right from the perspective of this photo; it's now the church's parking lot). In 2008, the "Journey in Faith and Grace" consolidation program saw the Most Holy Redeemer parish merge with that of St. Lawrence on East Delavan Avenue, whereafter the building was sold to its present owner, a nondenominational church with a predominantly African-American membership. |
