Truck crane-Japan Ground Self-Defense Force6240045
トラッククレーンは、トラックシャシと運転席、クレーンブーム及び制御部、荷台を持つものと、シャシと運転席、クレーンブーム・運転台及び旋回部を持ち荷台を持たないものに分けられる。 前述のトラッククレーンはシャシはメーカー製の、一般的なトラックのものを使用している。そのため、他のトラックと同様の走行性能を有している。
カーゴトラック、または代表的なメーカーの名前からユニックと呼ばれる事が多い。免許の関係上、2,9t吊と4,9t吊が多い。
後述のトラッククレーンは車両によって異なり、4tトラックのシャーシ後部にクレーンを架装したものと、専用シャーシの後部にクレーンを架装したものに分けられる。
ラフテレーンクレーンは自主規制により49km/h、オールテレーンクレーンは車種により異なるが60km/h程が最高速度の車両が多いのに対し、 トラッククレーンの最高速度は90～160km/h程となっている。ただし、総重量8t以上の大型自動車に該当する車両で荷台を有する車両は90km/hリミッターの装着が義務化されている為、最高速度は90km/hに規制される。
現在はトラッククレーンの需要は減りつつあり、専用シャーシを生産していた各社共に生産を中止している。
