Summary
[edit]DescriptionTroy forecourt of the Athena temple 7711.jpg |
English: This is where the forecourt of the Athena temple used to be, belonging to the Greek and Roman city of Ilion. Looking down one can see an area where Schliemann and Dörpfeld had dug. Marble fragments once belonged to the temple, which had a base of 36 x 16 m. and was surrounded by a Doric colonnade, supporting a coffered ceiling. Outside on the entablature were metopes (reliefs), the most famous showing Apollo/Helios, now displayed in Berlin. It is supposed the temple was built by Lysimachus, one of the successors of Alexander the Great, around 300 BC. It was restored in Roman times, probably by order of Emperor Augustus (31 BC-14 AD). The Athena festival was marked by sacrifices and athletic contest. |
