Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Tropical Cyclone Kai Tak formed over the southwest Pacific Ocean on December 13, 2017 and travelled west-northwest towards the Philippines as it strengthened slightly. Early on December 13, Tropical Cyclone Kai Tak sported maximum sustained winds of about 57 mph (93 km/h).

Unfavorable conditions weakened the storm and at 3:00 UTC on December 17 (10:00 p.m. EST on December 16), Kai-Tak had weakened to tropical depression status with maximum sustained winds of 34.5 mph (55.5 km/h), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). It was located about 443 mi (697 km) east-northeast of Puerto Princesa, Philippines.

The storm faces strong easterly vertical wind shear and is forecast to struggle as it moves generally westward over the next 48 hours. Kai Tak is expected to strengthen slightly when it moves over the warm waters of the South China Sea, but a northeasterly wind surge event is expected to absorb the system, leading to dissipation within 72 hours.
