Summary
[edit]DescriptionTropical Storm Flossie (MODIS 2019-07-31).jpg |
English: Tropical Depression 7E formed in the Eastern Pacific Ocean on Sunday, July 28, 2019, about 580 miles (930 km) south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. On July 29 at 5:00 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC), the depression strengthened into a tropical storm and was renamed Flossie.
The storm continued to strengthen as it moved westward across the eastern Pacific Ocean towards Hawaii and at 5:00 p.m. EDT on July 30 became Hurricane Flossie, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h). At that time, the center was located near latitude 12.3 North, longitude 121.3 West and Flossie was tracking westward to north-westward at about 14 mph (22 km/h). Hurricane Flossie’s track roughly follows that of Hurricane Erick and both are heading into conditions favorable for sustaining or increasing strength, at least for the next several days. Erick became the eastern Pacific’s third named hurricane of the 2019 season and the second major hurricane. As of July 30, Erick carries maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (209 km/h), bringing it to Category 4 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Both hurricanes are expected to pose a threat to Hawaii, but neither is predicted to make a direct hit on the islands. On July 29, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Flossie as it strengthened to become a tropical storm over the eastern Pacific Ocean. |
