Summary
[edit]DescriptionTropical Cyclone Penny (MODIS 2019-01-08).jpg |
English: Tropical Cyclone Penny formed from a tropical low over the Gulf of Carpentaria on December 31, 2018. On January 1, 2019, it made landfall just south of Weipa on the western York Peninsula with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph (75 km/h). Penny weakened as it traveled over land and emerged over the east coast of the York Peninsula as an ex-tropical cyclone. The warm waters of the Coral Sea encouraged strengthening and on January 2 the Bureau of Meteorology reported that Penny had regained tropical cyclone intensity and structure.
The intensification was short-lived, however and by 10:00 p.m. EST on January 7 (0300 UTC January 8) the Joint Typhoon Warning Centered issued the last advisory on Tropical Cyclone Penny. At that time the system was described as having a small, ragged, weak, and fully exposed low-level circulation and was fighting strong vertical wind shear. Located about 359 miles (578 km) east-southeast of Cairns, Australia and was tracking towards the southwest. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Penny moving away from the York Peninsula over the Coral Sea on January 4, 2019. At that time, Penny sported a clear apostrophe-shape with convection bands clearly radiating from a distinct center of circulation. |
