Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The first tropical cyclone of the Australian region cyclone season formed near the Solomons Islands on December 5, 2023. Tropical Cyclone Jasper continued to strengthen, reaching maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (129 km/h) on December 6, near the time the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the storm. Convective bands of the sprawling system covered almost all of the Solomons Islands, bringing strong winds and torrential rain. While flooding in low-lying areas was expected, little information about Jasper’s impact on the Islands has yet to become available.

At 10:00 p.m. EST on December 6 (0300 UTC on December 7), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) advised that Tropical Cyclone Jasper’s winds had increased to 97.8 mph (157 km/h). The center of the storm was located about 807 miles (1,298 km) east-northeast of Cairns, Australia and it was tracing southwestward.

Jasper is expected to intensify over the next 24 hours, reaching peak maximum sustained winds of 120.8 mph (194.4 km/h) and wind gusts reaching 149.6 mph (240.7 km/h) as it travels southward over the Coral Sea. Currently a Category 3 Tropical Cyclone it may reach Category 5 strength on the Australian Intensity Scale by December 8. After that time, the storm is expected to meet increasing wind shear and begin to weaken. Although the extended forecast track is uncertain, Tropical Cyclone Jasper is expected to make landfall on the Queensland coast, likely near Cairns, next week.
