Description
English: Tropical Cyclone Calvinia formed in the Southern Indian Ocean on December 29 and by the next day, the convective bands on its western side had blanketed the island. As Calvinia’s center sit just east of the island, the storm triggered a Class III tropical cyclone warning in Mauritius, closing the airport and stock exchange.

That same day the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Calvinia affecting Mauritius. The organized storm sported a rounded shaped with bands of thunderstorms spiraling around a cloud-filled center.

On December 30 at 0300 UTC (Dec. 29 at 10 p.m. EST) the Joint Typhoon Warning Center noted that Tropical Cyclone Calvinia was located near latitude 20.6 degrees south and longitude 58.8 degrees east, or about 90 nautical miles east-southeast of Mauritius. Maximum sustained winds were 35 knots (40 mph). This storm is moving to the southwest.

Calvinia is forecast to strengthen to 55 knots (63 mph) and curve to the southeast and away from Mauritius and St. Denis.
