PORTCHESTER MONUMENT A pleasant detour is that at Rye to Oakland Beach, perhapsthe prettiest bathing beach near New York, and managed by thetown of Rye (restaurant). A steamer plies to Sea Cliff on LongIsland. Now we roll over the Byram River, crossing from YorkState into Connecticut, the Land of Steady Habits. Green-wich, the most westerly of Connecticut towns, has been the sceneof many striking events since the first purchase of lands from theIndians in 1640. It will be remembered that this was the sceneof Putnams famous leap, Feb. 26, 1779, when, as he was ridingtowards Stamford for reinforcements to aid in withstanding theBritish raid under Tryon, he was pursued, and plunged down theface of the bluff near the old chapel. The British dared not fol-low and he escaped with only a bullet hole in the brim of his hat.The place has ever since been known as Puts Hill.
