ARCH OP TITUS, ROME. we know a good deal of the history of these Hittites from the records ofEgyptians, Babylonians, and Assyrians, their origin remains wrapped inobscurity. The Hittite characters have not yet been deciphered, althoughvarious attempts of interpreters have been made. The last of these is thatof Professor Peter Jensen, of the University of Marburg, who believes thatthe Hittite language is a prototype of the modern Armenian. Although anumber of prominent scholars have acknowledged their acceptance of theJensen system, it cannot be said as yet to have been definitely established,nor is it likely that a satisfactory key will be found until a large bilingualinscription containing a record in Hittite characters with a translation,
