The Triumph of San Rafael de la Puerta del Puente is one of the many triumphs in the city of Córdoba ( Spain ) dedicated to the archangel San Rafael , guardian angel of the city. It is located in the Plaza del Triunfo in the Cathedral neighborhood , within the historic center that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994, and very close to the Mosque-Cathedral , the Roman bridge and the Puerta of the Bridge . In 1756 Martín de Barcia arrived at the bishopric of Córdoba, who over time gained great devotion to San Rafael, so on February 23, 1765 he made known to the chapter his intention to undertake the construction of the monument, beginning the work on April 28 of the same year. The place where a hospital built by Bishop Pascual was located in the 13TH century was chosen to build the monument . In the excavation of the foundations, the lid of said bishop's tomb was found, with the inscription "Don Pascual, Bishop of Córdoba", so the cinerary urn was searched, which was serving as a fountain in the convent of Saint Augustine , to place both at the base of the monument. On June 22, 1771, when only some decorations and inscriptions remained to be placed, Bishop Martín de Barcia died and with his death the work was suspended, not resuming until June 29, 1779, when 6,000 pesos were released for the completion of the monument, which happened in 1781. The sculptural complex, with a height of more than twenty-seven meters, is made up of a black marble base on which a mount of the same material is erected simulating several blights and drilled in its center. At its summit rises a tower or castle of red jasper, adorned with battlements and door and window surrounds of white jasper which, in turn, serves as the base for a column of veined marble of various colors on which a capital is located. and the statue of the archangel. At both the base and the mountain there are some decorations and attributes, and in the latter, three white marble statues that represent the patron martyrs of Córdoba, San Acisclo and Santa Victoria , and Santa Bárbara |
